In the 1790 South Carolina Census there are two John Power listed in Laurens County.


Louis (Lewis) Powers (Power) born Jan. 1, 1786 in South Carolina  and died Sept. 09, 1871 in Magoffin County.  Lewis Powers married Elizabeth Martha Prater. Elizabeth was born July 28, 1791 in Russell County, VA. She is the daughter of Archibald Prater and Sarah M. Fugate. Nancy Prater (Elizabeth's sister) married William Patrick.  Lewis & Elizabeth married on Jan. 15, 1807 in Floyd County, Kentucky and they had twelve children. Lewis was a farmer. His home was valued at $2100.00 in 1850. Lewis is buried at the Bluegrass Cemetery in Magoffin County.

Capt. John Power (Powers) s/o Louis (Lewis) & Elizabeth Powers. John was born on April 27, 1808 and died Aug. 03, 1889. John married Nancy Williams on Aug. 15, 1831 in Morgan County, KY.  They had five children.

Nancy was born Jan. 07, 1810. Nancy married David May in 1827. David is the son of Caleb May and Margaretta Patrick. They had eleven children.

  2. Melissa May 1831-1897. Melissa married Eli Fairchild. They had nine children. Nancy Jane, David, Cynthia, Clarinda, Mary Ann, George, Newton, Grant and Manda Fairchild.
  3. James  Lewis May 1833-1905. James married (1st) Louisa Patrick and (2nd)  Sally Watson.
  4. Clarenda (Clarinda) May 1835-1891. Clarenda married John Fairchild.  They had ten children. Samuel, George, Emily, Henry, Frank, Mary, John, Newton, Dennis and Trennie Fairchild.
  5. William Smith May 1837-1912. William married Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Perkins. They had nine children. John C., Harlan, Dud, Charlie, Willie, Mary, Martha, Goldie and Manda May.
  6. Cynthia May 1841-1918. Cynthia married Sanford Powers. They had eleven children. John, Julia, Ann, George, Frank, Emily, Nannie, Sarah, Will Press, Minnie and Myrtle Powers.
  7. John May 1843-1875. John married Kate Rice.
  8. Mary "Polly" Ann May 1845-?. Mary married John Rice.
  9. Thomas Green May 1847-1913. Thomas married Martha Rice and 2nd Mandy Conley.
  10. Emily Jane May 1850-1900
  11. Samuel May 1852-?.



Holloway Powers son of Louis (Lewis) & Elizabeth Powers. Holloway was  born Jan 7, 1812  in Floyd County, KY.  He married Clarinda (Clarenda) P. Prater. They had ten children. Holloway was a Farmer. His home in 1860 valued at $4,300.00 and his personal value was $2,000.00.

Celia Powers d/o Lewis & Elizabeth Powers. Celia  was born on April 05, 1824-1825.  Celia married Samuel May. Samuel is the son of Caleb May and Margaretta Patrick. Samuel and David are brothers. Celia and Samuel had eight children.
  1. Sarah Elizabeth May "Aunt Lizzie"  b. Jan. 25, 1853. Sarah married Captain William Jefferson "Jeff" Prater.
  2. Wm. Lewis May 1855-1927. William married Martha Patrick. William was a Magoffin County Judge and Superintendent of Schools.
  3. Mary Alice May 1856-1956. Mary married Samuel "Sam" Prater (lived in Missouri). They had three children. Guy, Sudie and Elizabeth Prater.
  4. Henry Clay May 1860-1948. 
  5. Louisa Margaret May 1859-1894. She married Lee Bailey.
  6. John Crittenton (Crittenden) May 1863-?. John married Laura Prater. They lived in Nebraska. They had six children. Ross, Louisa, Zelma, Lewis, Nina and Clarence May.
  7. James Harlan May 1865-?. James married Nannie Day.
  8. Samuel David "Dee" May 1867-1935. Dee married Dora Rice and (2nd) Margaret Collins.




James Powers son of Louis (Lewis)  & Elizabeth Powers. James was born in 1830 in KY and died 1883. James married Nancy Jane Blair. Nancy was born 1839 in KY and died in 1927.  James Powers was a carpenter. They had seven children. Nancy Jane  made soap and Jimmy Allen has her old black kettle. He said that it don't have any scratches on it or not the first spot of rust either.

Dudley H.  "Dud" Powers son of James & Nancy Jane Powers. He was  born Sept 16, 1872 in Magoffin County  and died July 30, 1929 in Magoffin County. Dudley Powers married  Ann Pinix. Ann is the daughter of Henry Pinix and Susannah Conley.  They had two children Jane & Patrick Powers.
